Internet Outage Stages 1 & 2 ,19 January 2016
At 16:30 on 19 January 2016 Telstra suffered a massive outage of its authentication servers which impacted not only the entire estate, but a large number of premises in north and south Canberra. This was resolved at apx 19:12 that night.
Note that officially Telstra stated to me it was a scheduled outage (though happy for people to show me where this was listed). The advice the committee has was that it was a significant power outage at Deakin exchange.
What I noticed with this incident was that communication with neighbours assists everyone, in terms of some of the ‘hoops’ in the scripts that call centre staff at Telstra are required to follow. In other words, having to troubleshoot all possible issues with your modem with a call centre operator, when you know the entire area is out seems pointless and a waste of time.
The more people register the fault, the more likely it is to be escalated. It is helpful that if people are aware of maintenance being undertaken in the estate, that they place a comment on the maintenance page to keep a history of work undertaken in the estate. Our requests to Telstra for this history has been refused.
On another note, the committee is meeting at the end of January to touch base on our collaborative efforts with the media and the Nathan Forest Community Association who are in the process of undertaking a Area Switch application.
Please let me know if there is interest in a community meeting or catch up, and I am happy to organise one.
Cheers
Steve
