Telstra Gateway NBN Modems have been arriving – a simple guide

Quite a few people who have ordered their Fibre To The Node (FTTN) connection through Telstra have started to receive their modems.

It is very important to activate your FTTN as soon as possible. This is an important first step towards being eligible to submit an NBN Technology Choice Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) Application, a service which will be far superior in all aspects to FTTN.  There will also be no need transition to a newer internet plan, as NBN plans are ‘technology agnostic’.
In 18 months time your normal phone and internet services will be cut off, as you are required to transition to NBN by December 2018.

You can swap out your modem/router now and use it it with your ADSL1 connection.  This means that when your copper pairs do get swapped over to NBN, it simply saves hassle. You should get access to the faster speeds when they have reset the port after they have done the work.

Plug it in as per the picture on the card that came in the box:

(This modem/router can also be used as a wifi router with FTTP, you simply plug the FTTP box into the ‘WAN’ port and it should just connect automatically. Much simpler)

If you have an existing Telstra gateway modem, you access it through the browser the same way – ie. type “10.0.0.138” and press enter.

You will come to the Telstra gateway login menu:

The default password for the admin user account is admin.

You will then come to the gateway basic menu screen. Press the ‘broadband’ icon:

You need to know your Telstra username and password for your internet account.

Enter your username and password. Note the full address is required (ie. ending in ‘@bigpond.com’ or ‘@bigpond.net.au’):

Make sure you hit the ‘apply’ button.

Give it a minute, and wait for the lights on the top to change:

Green means good.

Im no expert, but I hope this helps someone. Worked for me anyway.
