Voice and Internet outages 19-23 December 2014
|Gleneagles Residents, amongst other areas of Canberra, suffered outages over this period of not just internet communications but also voice telephony.
If we had a modern telecommunications backbone for the Estate, would the problem diagnosis and fault resolution take this long? There is a complex infrastructure in place to provide us with these services, but it stands to reason that its unlikely to have impacted us as much, or at all, if we had a passive optical fibre communications network in the estate. These networks are much easier to troubleshoot from a network perspective, and things like torrents of water and bolts of lightening do not impact them generally.
Lets work together as a community, encourage our neighbours to make a change, through supporting this project, by voting in the polls, and registering your interest.

I’m just trying to improve my home and ADSL bundle with Telstra and I’m being asked to sign another 24 month contract. I feel this is a bit rich considering they are the only service provider for cable and the service is inadequate in terms of connection and speed. The Telecommunications Ombudsman suggested our local member may have some advice. Clearly I hope that fibre to the home comes off in the long run. I’m not keen to be ‘caught’ in a contract for crappy services if it does. Any thoughts?

We have the estate serviced by Telstra Wholesale CMUX equipment (ie. a mini exchange run by Telstra, which ISP wholesale services through) – offering ADSL1 services only over copper.
TPG, IINET and Telstra are the big players here. There may be others (the http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/viewexchange.php?Exchange=KBAH gives us the exchange, not telstra wholesale providers).
The project has engaged our representatives in HOR and Senate, as well as the Minister to represent the interests of the Gleneagles Estate community in this regard.
I agree, not signing any contract sounds like a good option. I guess ask to talk to the retentions team and get them to explain to you why you shouldn’t go to IINET or TPG.
We have identified that our internet is sub standard, though the wiring in the house could be part of it too (also, is a central ADSL filter installed? How many phone outlets? Is there noise on the telephone line that you can hear when you pick up the phone?).
I wish I could offer more guidance here, however until we can get our infrastructure upgraded here – and the committee is trying ALL angles – we are stuck with it.
