Expression of Interest in FTTP – *POST* Gleneagles Estate FTTP Project

What is FTTP?

Removes the copper line from your internet and phone, to deliver these services via Fibre-Optic cable. This offers up to 4 independent services to the premises, and speeds up to 1000 Mbps. You get what you pay for, depending on the performance of your internet provider. With FTTN, the speeds and quality of service is always variable and impacted by rain and ground water in pits, congestion, etc.

There are a lot of happy people in the estate who now have NBN FTTP, and this has placed Gleneagles Estate in a unique position compared to almost all other residences south of Lake Burley Griffin.

This would not have been possible without the very hard working members of the committee, and the residents participating in the project to make it such a success.

I personally want to thank these people again for all their help, effort and participation.  I really appreciate your support over the last 5 years.

Did you miss out?

Whilst the Gleneagles Estate Fibre To The Premises Project has well and truly closed (with almost 30% of the premises in the estate connected to FTTP), a few of new residents have moved into the estate since the work was completed.

I would like to assess *IF* there was enough interest to form a single “Group Switch” of Technology Choice Applications to pay for NBNCo to upgrade your Fibre To The Node (FTTN) to Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) . A group switch would consist of at least 10 residents sharing the costs equally to have their premises upgraded.

If you already have FTTP, talk to your neighbours and see if they are interested.

What is NBN Technology Choice?

Please take the time to look at all the information in the NBN Technology Choice Website https://www1.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/technology-choice-program so you can make an informed decision.

How much does it cost?

The average build cost at the time was $3,100 per premises for the groups we formed, which was well below the average known cost of $13,000 per premises (data sourced from whirlpool spreadsheet)

There is now a $330 fee per premises to get a build quote and contract prepared by NBNCo.

There is no assurance that any potential new group will get as good a price as those who participated in the project.

There is a lot of fibre running through the estate thanks to the project, will they use that?

Yes, a large amount of fibre at the street level has been deployed thanks to the contributors of the project.  This could be utilised, however the real costs are the contracted labour and associated overheads which are expensed to the applicant in entirety (eg. travel allowance)

How long does it take?

The process usually takes 6 months from submitting the application to activation of service.

If I am interested, when should I let you know?

Expressions of Interest are required by FRIDAY 29 May 2020.

Caveats

  • We may be required to engage a contractor to rod and rope premises ourselves. This would be additional expense.
  • Costs may have changed since the project was completed, and internal NBNCo processes as well.
  • There needs to be enough residents interested in forming a group, and make a commitment to proceed with the contract.
  • A co-ordinator is required, I possibly may take on that role if there is enough interest.  Note I have spent over 2,000 hours over 5 years on the project, and have a family!

Thanks & Cheers
