REMINDER Expression of Interest (and Why Are We Doing This)?

Official NBN Expression Of Interest (EOI)

Thank you to all who attended the Community Meeting on Monday 4 December. Your attendance and support thoroughly convinced NBN Co of the level of interest in Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) and this has had a direct impact on the momentum within NBN to progress further.

The response to the NBN Expression Of Interest (EOI) has been outstanding so far, with 30% of premises in the Gleneagles Estate registering an EOI in less than 24 hours of the survey becoming live.

Those who have not submitted an EOI to NBN, may I ask that if you are interested in paying for a FTTP connection to resolve the internet issues you are experiencing, please submit an EOI as soon as possible.  We have had the EOI period extended to 31 December 2017 to give everyone the best possible chance to take advantage of this opportunity.

Registration in the NBN EOI is essential in order to continue to participate in the opportunity that we are providing for residents of Gleneagles Estate.  The more premises that participate, the higher the benefits of cost-sharing for not only yourself but everyone in our community.

If you did not get a screen like this when submitting your EOI:

Please email nbn@gleneaglesestate.net with all the requested info from the form (full name of property owner is important FYI) and I will get it in the system for you.

It has taken 3 years hard work by a number of dedicated residents to get us to this point, and represents the only opportunity to fix the internet problems in Gleneagles Estate.

The official NBN Co survey can be completed by going to http://gleneaglesestate.net/eoi.

Why are we doing this?

Dependence on the internet

We will only become more and more dependent on the internet, where the internet as a utility sits alongside gas, water and electricity.  Banking, interacting with any government service, bill paying, online shopping, and streaming media such as Netflix and Stan are only the start.  All would agree that our dependence on the internet has only markedly increased since the project was officially launched on 1 December 2014.

Possibility of any future upgrades?

  • There is no forecast funding for any upgrades of FTTN infrastructure after the NBN rollout is complete in 2020.
  • IF there was future upgrade in the near future, which is more than likely to be Fibre To The Curb (FTTC) will still have hundreds of metres of copper in the connection to your home, and so it will still be impacted by rain and corrosion.
  • IF there was any a future upgrade would have to go through a significant planning and design process, which would mean the time taken to complete this would be probably the same time to roll out the NBN itself  (4-7 years).  In other words, decades given a decision has to be made, another $20-30bn needs to be funded.
  • Any future upgrade would be unlikely once the NBN has been sold to the private sector (think the Telstra experience over the last 20 years)
  • Whilst not officially published, the ALP policy has removed FTTP from the agenda as the rollout in areas is too far gone to reverse.

Gunghalin has FTTP, what is it like?

The FTTP experience in Gungahlin is that their internet is more reliable than their household power supply – in other words, they have more blackouts than the internet outages. Think about it for a second.

Real Estate Value

As previously advised, there is increasing evidence that Fibre to the Home improves property values where it is in place. One resident had two valuers assess his home, with one deducting $12,000 from the value and the other $15,000 because broadband access was only Fibre to the Node (FTTN). In a study by realestate.com.au the absence of Fibre to the Home will reduce potential buyers by 25-30%.  On this basis extending fibre to your home will protect its value into the future.

Gleneagles Estate will be the only ‘brownfields’ area (ie. established residential area) south of Lake Burley Griffin to have FTTP.

Thank you for your continued support and participation.
